Episode Server Problem

If Pocket Casts says there was a problem playing the episode, the server hosting that episode may be having trouble right now.

This usually means Pocket Casts was able to reach the podcast host, but the server ran into an error before it could deliver the audio.

This can happen if:

  • the podcast host is temporarily down
  • the server hosting the episode is having technical problems
  • the episode file is available, but the server failed while trying to deliver it
  • the podcast provider’s system is overloaded or temporarily misconfigured

In most cases, this is temporary and outside Pocket Casts’ control.

This is the most common fix.

Temporary server errors often clear up on their own once the podcast host resolves the problem.

Refresh the podcast in Pocket Casts, then try the episode again.

If streaming fails, try downloading the episode instead.

If downloading also fails, the problem is more likely to be with the episode host.

If only one episode is affected, the problem may be limited to that file.

If several episodes from the same podcast fail, the podcast host may be having a broader issue.

If possible, try the same episode:

  • in another podcast app
  • in a browser
  • on the podcast’s website

If it fails in multiple places, that usually means the issue is with the episode host rather than Pocket Casts.

Switch between WiFi and mobile data if possible.

This usually won’t fix an episode server problem, but it can help rule out a connection issue.

This usually means the server hosting the episode had a temporary problem while Pocket Casts was trying to play it.

Pocket Casts does not host podcast episode audio, so if the publisher’s server returns an error, playback may fail until the issue is fixed on their side.

You may want to contact the podcast provider if:

  • the same episode keeps failing for a long time
  • multiple episodes from the same podcast are affected
  • the issue also happens in other apps or browsers

Please contact us if:

  • the episode works elsewhere but not in Pocket Casts
  • many different podcasts are affected
  • the problem continues even after trying again later

When you contact us, it helps to include:

  • the podcast name
  • the episode title
  • whether you were trying to stream or download
  • whether the issue affects one episode or multiple episodes
  • whether the episode works in another app or browser
  • your device type and app version
