Duplicate episodes

In this guide

If an episode shows up twice in Pocket Casts, there are two common reasons, and the fix is different for each.

From time to time, a podcast author may republish an episode, causing it to appear in Pocket Casts more than once.

This is usually accidental, so if you see a duplicate episode let the podcast authors know. After they fix the feed, the app will update itself after a week or two and remove episodes that are no longer listed in the podcast’s feed.

A rare syncing problem can leave behind a duplicate episode entry that is no longer linked to its podcast, sometimes called an orphaned episode. These can make an episode’s download or playback status look wrong in some parts of the app.

On iOS you can find and remove them yourself:

  1. Tap Profile, then Help & Feedback.
  2. Tap the (More) icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Tap Troubleshooting.
  4. Pocket Casts checks for orphaned episodes automatically. If it finds any, you can tap the result to see which episodes they are.
  5. Tap Remove Orphaned Episodes, then confirm.

Removing them can’t be undone, though Pocket Casts does its best to preserve your playback progress, download status, and other episode details first.

If the check reports that no orphaned episodes were found, this isn’t what’s causing the duplicate you can see, and the republished-episode explanation above is the more likely one.
